Paediatric Osteopathy

On this page you will find, what Paediatric Osteopathy is, and what to expect in the appointments, and what happens after.

Patients under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or adult with consent of the parents to be present

What is
Paediatric Osteopathy

Paediatric Osteopathy, is traditional Osteopathy, but in a different age group, typically during the growing years up to the age of 16. The thing that makes it different is the younger population have different characteristics, such as natural flexibility, and a reduced chance of muscle injuries. In addition, we have to look out for different risk factors, and a different variety of diagnoses.

With Paediatric Osteopathy, we offer cranial osteopathy within the treatments for the ages of 0-3yrs old.

In light of these differences, the process of appointments run the same as Osteopathy based on case history, previous history and in addition, dependent on age there will be questions regarding the pregnancy and birth of the child.

We also pride ourselves on our knowledge of child athletes and the needs of the developing body to combat the high impact of sports, or the needs of a recovering region following a bone break and casting.

What to
expect

Prior to Consult

All that is needed is a case history of the injury or complaint in question including what eases and triggers it. In addition, if an adult, that is not a parent, attends, signed consent is needed to allow the adult into the treatment room, and to give consent on behalf of the child if required.

At the Consult

In the consult, a case history will be taken covering present complaint history, previous medical history, and depending on age, information regarding labour and pregnancy. Following this, an assessment will be carried out and where necessary some milestone reflexes will also be undertaken. Afterwards, a diagnosis will be given explaining the believed cause, and then treatment appropriate to the diagnosis will occur.

Follow-Up Treatments

Following the consult we will book in a follow up treatment dependent on original presentation and practitioner beliefs on when to return, typically between 1-3 weeks. In these sessions, a brief conversation will occur to discuss how previous treatment went and how the complaint is progressing, then treatment will follow.

F.A.Q.s

Do I need to accompany my child?

If your child is under the age of 16 they must be accompanied by a parent or an adult with signed consent to bring them. We encourage 16-17 year olds to come with someone but is not necessary we just need signed consent by an adult, for us to treat them.

How far does the child need to undress

We encourage children to wear sport shorts and for girls a vest top or something of similar nature.
