On this page discover more about Osteopathy, what it is, what to expect in the appointments, and what to do after them.
What is
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a style of treatment for you, that is formed of assessment, diagnosis, tailored treatment, and at-home exercises and stretching. Osteopathy was founded by AT Still back in 1872 due to his belief that the doctors medical approach did not incorporate the whole body in a holistic way.
Since then Osteopathy has progressed to treat a wide range of diagnoses from simple muscle strains, to chronic illnesses such as Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Syndrome.
So what is the holistic approach in Osteopathy? It is holistic as Osteopaths look at the whole body not just the injury site such as adjacent joints, visceral components, and engrained habits such as gait cycle, allowing us to provide a tailored treatment that is tailored to you, your body and your lifestyle.

Prior to Consult
There is nothing big to do prior to consultation, we only ask you to think about the timeline of your injury and medical history (surgery, medications etc.). This ensures the case history taking is as quick and easy as possible, this allows us to progress onto assessment and treatment faster. Then on the day, ensure you have appropriate clothing for your injury such as shoulder and upper back injury wearing a bra that has a back clasp and shows the spine.

At the Consult
In the consult, to begin will be case history which will be a discussion regarding your current complaint, previous history around other injuries, a few lifestyle questions and your general medical history. These questions allow us to gain an accurate picture of you to help diagnose and treat you properly.
Following this will be the assessment, where you will be asked to undress down to undergarments or shorts that allow full motion. This will include special movements and testing to determine what will cause pain. [these tests may induce pain].
After testing, you will receive a diagnosis where possible, and treatment can begin based on this.

After Consult
After the consult, during the first few days, some discomfort and stiffness may persist due to the treatment. We recommend that you keep moving the injury and apply heat in the mornings and evenings.

Follow-Up Treatments
After an appropriate time has passed based on the assessment, usually between 1-3 weeks we will book in a follow up appointment. This will consist of a small catch-up including how you were following treatment, any thing new you have noticed such as improvements in motion, reduced stiffness etc. Then you will have further treatment to help the injury.
F.A.Q.s
What is appropriate clothing?
Things you feel comfortable in, if what is listed below is what you feel comfortable in please feel free to wear what is and we will figure a way around it.
Women - A bra that unclips at the back, covering underwear or shorts, providing you can move in them.
Men - Tight boxers or shorts (preferably around mid-thigh)

Do I need to have another consultation for a new complaint?
Providing you have been at the clinic in the past 6 months you will not need a new full consult, you will have a 'mini-consult' in the same time slot as a follow-up where we will take a case history of the new complaint, assess it, and provide treatment.
